Keynote sustainability in our medical profession: how do we ensure everyone’s involved? | Prof. Dr. Jamiu Busari

Samenvatting
Creating a sustainable future in our medical profession is not just a need but a necessity. It demands making conscious and deliberate choices to be more diverse, inclusive, and fair, both in the way we select future doctors and in how we design our healthcare teams. A few key elements needed for this include: • Education and Training: Providing education that includes diverse perspectives, addresses social justice issues, and ensuredequitable opportunities for all aspiring specialists. This can be through inclusive curricula, mentorship, and scholarships. • Diverse Representation: Ensuring that people from various backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives are part of the field, both as healthcare providers and patients, helps make the profession more inclusive and relevant to everyone. • Accessible Care: Striving for equal access to health care for all populations, including underrepresented or underserved communities, ensures that everyone can receive quality treatment. • Cultural Competency: Training medical professionals in cultural competence to ensure that care is respectful and sensitive to patients’ cultural needs and differences. • Community Engagement: Build strong connections with the communities you serve, listen to their needs, and adapt care to be more inclusive and sustainable based on feedback from diverse groups. • Research & Innovation: Encouraging research that considers the needs of all demographics, including those that may be overlooked in standard studies, to foster innovation that benefits everyone. • Workforce Diversity: Ensuring a workforce that reflects the diversity of the population served by actively recruiting from underrepresented groups to create a more inclusive work environment and broaden perspectives within the profession.
